DEBATABLE EVENTS IN THE RAMAYANA

DEBATABLE EVENTS

With reference to my dissertation work I have studied the view of Mr.C.Ramanathan on some debatable events which I would like to mention here to clear the concept of ethics in the Ramayana such as Ethics of Promise Keeping, Ethics in killing without enmity, Virtues of devotion and loyalty, Morality of killing Vali, Morality of Rama’s treatment of Sita, Ethics of abandonment of Sita, The Socially depressed, Varna hierarchy, Varna and the ashrama system, Purusarthas, Emotional ethics of Lakshman, Surrender of Vibhishana, Ethics of war,Truth, Fatalism. Events of the Ramayana are purported to the value of dharma, artha and kama which have social ethical valuation. Character of Rama’s emphasizing as an ethical hero. Aurobindo has also said that the Ramayana gives us the picture of an entirely moralized civilization containing indeed vast material development and immense intellectual power, but both moralized and subordinated to the purity of temperament and delicate idealization of action. It is fact that the Ramayana was written with the purpose of propagating the social and cultural value of the society. According to the Ramayana we should behave like Rama and not as Ravana which distinguished dharma and adharma. Events of the Ramayana narrated more practical ethics as every character’s related with purusarthas and their wish to achieve goals of dharma, artha, kama and moksa.
